One French 5 Francs coin, minted between 1848-1849, in Fine or better circulated condition. These coins have seen moderate circulation, but the design features and lettering are still well-defined. Our coins have original patina/toning, and have never been cleaned.
These silver crown coins feature the iconic "Hercules group" design of the talented French engraver Augustin Dupré. First used on 5 franc coins for the 1st French Republic, from 1795-1802, the design was later reused on these coins from the 2nd French Republic, and later still on 5 franc coins of the 3rd French Republic (1870-1889). It just goes to show that the French loved this design nearly as much as they loved starting revolutions.
The design itself is fraught with symbolism. The man in the middle is Hercules, the legendary hero from Greek mythology, used here as a symbol of martial power. Hercules is accompanied by two women, both personifications of national ideals—the Republic stands on the left, holding a staff topped by a liberty cap, while Justice stands on the right holding a scale. The reverse inscription translates as, "Liberty - Equality - Fraternity," three guiding principles for the young republic.
